Why this portfolio works

Philanthropy tends to follow density, and rural and small-town communities get left out of that logic by default, even where some of the country's most durable civic organizing is happening.

We chose these organizations because each covers ground the others don't: connecting scattered rural communities into shared statewide capacity, building the civic education that makes organizing across difference possible, advancing tribal-led development, convening regional leadership across state lines, and anchoring resilience in geographically isolated communities. Each has real results behind it, and each was selected over other qualified groups for how its work reinforces the rest. No single organization reaches all of rural America. This portfolio comes closer.
