Why this portfolio works

Local newsrooms have shrunk for two decades, and the gap left behind gets filled by disinformation or by nothing at all. Rebuilding a healthy information ecosystem takes more than one kind of reporting.

No two organizations here do the same job: local accountability reporting, Spanish-language civic news, disinformation response, statewide political coverage, and the funding infrastructure nonprofit newsrooms depend on. Each has a demonstrated track record, and each was chosen over other newsrooms and organizations doing similar work for how well it complements the rest. That's more of the information ecosystem than any single newsroom could cover.
